Blast from the past
I had a strong feeling of something-is-not-okay during a meeting today.
One of our vendors opened his notebook, connected it to a projector, and started showing us something on the wall.
In the beginning I couldn’t quite pinpoint it. Slides, diagrams, images, text. Normal things. What the heck is not normal? Then I realized! He was running Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6!
It felt so...

Yahoo, why art thou so lame?
Logged in to Yahoo after quite a long time.
Now it’s asking me to set two secret questions and answers. And look what they recommend for the answers: “Make sure your answer is private, memorable and does not change over time” — How smart! That’s the fastest way for someone to guess your password: if it’s memorable and doesn’t change over time! :-)
And...

JavaScript: The Good Parts →
It looks like there are many good books coming out this May. And this can only make me happy :)
Douglas Crockford, of JavaScript: The World’s Most Misunderstood Programming Language fame, proves that he can write not only good essays, but also good books. His (first?) book called JavaScript: The Good Parts focuses on what’s good inside JavaScript: OOP, functional programming, loose...

Another good Rails book from The Pragmatic Programmers!
Deploying Rails Applications: A Step-by-Step Guide covers deploying Rails applications under shared hosting, virtual machine, and dedicated server hosting environments, and looks at the variety of technologies you can use, such as Apache, Nginx and Mongrel.
Monitoring, source control, and automated deployment using Capistrano are also...

Look who's tweeting next
After I was bitching about the silly location-based language settings employed by Google’s Blogger, it’s now Twitter’s time to be stupid … while trying to be smart.
Although my Twitter language is set to English, they are trying to be (too) friendly and since they’ve launched Twitter Japan they are sending me emails in Japanese!
I suppose it’s based on my...

xeal.ro not found - again!
I can’t believe it! I’m getting a 404 Server Not Found when I’m accessing xeal.ro. It happened last week and now again!
I really have to move my other blog from Blogger to a better place. Like DreamHost.
And I have to start using a good blogging engine. Ideally written in Rails. Like Typo.
Yes, I definitely have to do it. I just need a day to be 28 hours instead of 24…...

Blogger outsmarting itself
I wonder why Blogger (and other sites too) tries to be too smart and shows me the Blogger toolbar in Japanese?! When the blog I’m reading is in English! I just checked and it does it for any blog hosted on Blogger.
Okay, you detected my IP address. You figured out that I am in Japan and try serving me what you think is good for me.
The problem is that I don’t know the language. And...

Sleep deprivation is not a badge of honor →
Forgoing sleep is like borrowing from a loan shark. Sure you get that extra hours right now to cover for your overly-optimistic estimation, but at what price? The shark will be back and if you can’t pay, he’ll break your creativity, morale, and good-mannered nature as virtue twigs.

xeal.ro went MIA
I haven’t realized, till today around noon, that my Romanian blog was no longer accessible online…
I wanted to write a quick post today and when I tried accessing it instead of the normal blog page, it returned a nasty “Server not found. Error 404”. Thanks Blogger for being so reliable :(

Alex Kerr
(Re)discovered today Alex Kerr’s website. Very interesting stuff!
I really like his calligraphy page, and in particular how he wrote the kanji for Magic (魔 Ma - in Japanese).
Maybe I should buy&read his first book Lost Japan.
Even better would be to buy one of his calligraphies :)

Alain: Go to [company].co.jp.
Me: (Looking around lost) Go to where?
Alain: *Type* [company].co.jp in your browser!
Me: Ah, okay... "Server not found"
Me: No, we cannot be *that* stupid!
Me: Typing www.[company].co.jp ... Site loaded.
Me: Yes, we can!
